Okay, I put this on BT, but GW need one too! I'm going to be reviewing a book I just read. Feel free to add reviews, but remember spoiler tags! Title: Spirit Author: J.P Hightman Rating ** 1/2 out of ***** When I picked this up at the public library I was intrigued. It had everything a slightly morbid person like me could want. It was about ghosts, witches and a promise of death. The blurb begins:
"It's something of a Romeo and Juliet story. There was a young couple in Salem, long ago... And the girl's mother, she hated the boy. When the witch-hunting began, mother, daughter, and suitor all ended up at the Blackthorne hanged."
And in a way, it DIDN'T disappoint. There was enough death and paranormal goings on to keep you satisfied. But contrary to popular belief, plot twists can be a bad thing, especially when there's too many of them.
Tess and Tobias are seventeen years old, already married and accomplished ghost hunters. Semi likable, a tiny bit irksome. I could deal with that. It was the lame ending that got me. I mean, the whole premise is semi-set up on 'when Tess and Tobias are near each other, they're strong, when they are far apart, they're weak.' So why at the end when they're reunited do they lose the ultimate fight for they're souls?
And sure, we don't like blatantly happy endings, but this was just... It was like a M. Night Shyamalan movie, except badly executed.
It does have a kick ass cover though.
