Hey guys! I'm in a really good mood today and wrote some parts of the next chapter of Lover. I don't know when I'll get around to writing the whole chapter, and I'm busy this weekend so here's a couple teasers:
“Hey Alice, Kim's doing a report on Artemis for her English class and I told her that you know just about everything on the subject. Anything you want to tell her?” I say, partially to break the silence, but mostly just to see how Artemis will react.
I look across the table to my sister, unaccustomed to seeing the way she looks as a 20-year-old. She purses her lips and says, “Well, first off she's Apollo's older sister, and-”
“Apollo is older,” I interrupt stubbornly out of habit. Then I wish I could shove the words back in my mouth. Kim already knows that my family is a bit out of the ordinary, and my sister and me arguing about something like this is not going to make us appear to be the most normal family.
She gets a wry smile on her face. “Alex, wisdom comes with age, so it's clear that Artemis is the older twin.”
It's times like this that make me wish I could control my temper. “Are you saying something about Apollo?” I demand.
She rolls her silvery eyes. “I'm just saying that he's not the brightest bulb in the tanning bed, as you would say.”
“I'm-he's the god of the sun!” Again, I really wish I could control my temper. Artemis glares at me, and Kim gives me a weird look. I look at Mom pleadingly, hoping she figures out that it's time for a change of subject.
She throws on her best hostess smile and says, “Would anyone like a cookie?”
Why does this feel like the beginning of a very bad day?
---
“Artemis!” I protest, again forgetting to watch what I say.
“...So she changed her name too?” Kim asks in confusion, reminding me that I told her my name used to be Apollo. Crap. If only Mom knew that.
“Yeah.”
“No...” Mom says in confusion right as I say yeah.
Okay, time for some on-the-spot lying. “Mom, is your Alzheimer's acting up again?” I say with fake concern. Okay, maybe Mom looks a little young for Alzheimer's, but you can't really get technical when you have about two seconds to come up with something.
Now Mom is really confused. “Apollo, I don't have Alzheimer's.” Just like I do a lot, right as she says it she realizes her mistake.
Kim looks at me, then Artemis, and finally my supposedly Alzheimer's-suffering mother. If she wasn't suspicious before, there's no doubt about it now.
I put my head in my hands. “My life is officially ruined.”
“Look on the bright side,” Artemis says cheerfully. “At least she hasn't met the crazy relatives yet.”
