What's your mental picture of the characters? The descriptions in the book are slightly contradictory and often vague (Riordan believes in forsaking detail to keep the plot moving along at a clip), so what do you see the characters as looking like?

Well...
Percy I image of average height and weight and looking more Greek then Annabeth/Luke/Thalia/Nico/everyone else really. Darkish olive skin tone and green eyes you only ever see in stories.
Annabeth I imagine tall and tan, with hair kind of like Shakira's (okay, I know I'm crazy) and really white teeth.
Luke I think has pale sandy hair, worn short with sapphire eyes. Angular features, tall.
I have a perfect mental image of Thalia actually, which is why I wish they'd cast her. Short hair and kind of stick up, but isn't cropped really. A roundish nose and freckles (about as many as my friend Cora does) and I know this boy with Zeus child eyes. If Thalia were a boy, I'd have picked him purely for the eyes.
Nico and Bianca I imagine tall, with a kind of pinched look. Or Nico's more pinched looking, but Bianca's not for some reason.

Well, I'm horrible at descriptions, but I'll try... Percy has longish (but above his shoulder) shaggy black hair, and a normally shaped face. His features are sort of blurred, but he's laughing at something Grover's done. (Yes, I think about it in terms of...almost photographs. )

Percy - Pin-straight black hair that's perpetually falling into his face. Green eyes that always, always, always somehow make it look as if he is "up to something." Sharp features. A bit of a tan. Around average height and weight for his age, but maybe juuust a little gangly-looking. He's a sneaker guy, by the way. Converse. He's one of those people who would wear sneakers with a suit. (Much to Sally's chagrin.)
Annabeth - Pretty. Inquisitive gray eyes. Wavy golden-blonde hair that turns into absolutely enviable curls if it's taken care of and a frizzy mess if it's not. Somewhat willowy in stature and build. Confident and usually pretty open, at least in appearance and terms of body language. She's kind of meticulous about her appearance most of the time -- because if she looks neat, she reasons, then she's in control -- so it's kind of a big deal when her hair's a tangled mess or something. Her clothes are typically spring/summery: greens, yellows and golds, soft blues and lavenders. You know, happy, peaceful colors. Personal bit of fanon: her ears aren't pierced until Titan's Curse, just because Thalia dragged her.
Grover - Cute! Open, oval face. Golden-brown eyes with tiny green rings around the pupils. Slightly upturned nose. Abundant brown curls. Broad mouth that always looks like he's about to smile, even when he's being (or trying to be) serious. Kind of stocky, and he's done growing. A little bit of a goatee going on sometimes. (It's not that he doesn't shave; it's just that facial hair just grows so slowly for satyrs and then he forgets.)
Juniper - Olive skin. Long hair that's never been cut tumbling straight down her back, about thigh-length. Hazel eyes. Tall and lanky. She's about Percy's height, making her an inch or two taller than Grover, a fact which she's self-concious about but he's not. When she blushes, she blushes green, thanks to chlorophyll. She never wears conventional makeup or jewelry -- flowers twisted into a necklace, a braid of willow birches as a headband and bracelet, and a few perfectly-applied stains of berry juice in place of lipstick, and she's ready to go. She hates shoes. Unless they're vegan.
Thalia - More "beautiful" or "lovely" than "pretty". Features that are kind of delicate and fey-like--when she's not glaring. Petite. (Annabeth is about a hand's length taller than her now, just for that extra bit of awkwardness.) Waif-like figure, which makes it all the more surprising when people have their butts handed to them. Pale, with just the faintest dusting of freckles across the bridge of her nose. Black hair that's razor-cut, but is usually either long and straight or short and curly. When it's long, the weight and thickness of it drags out the curl. Her eyes are electric blue most of the time, but flash green when she's angry. She doesn't blush, just gets a faintly pink tinge. Clothes that walk the line between near-goth and over-the-top goth.
Luke - You know that really hot blonde guy from that American Eagle catalogue, the one who's in that underwear ad on Times Square? Yeah, him. Okay, fine. Luke's a pretty, pretty boy. My mental image of Luke is tall, tanned, and has a certain affinity for snarky t-shirts and cargo pants or else puka shell beads, board shorts, and polos. Pre-series and in Lightning Theif, he has touseled white-blonde hair that is mostly straight but curls up juuust a little at the very ends. Post-Lightning Theif, he cuts his pretty hair and starts dressing more preppy. His eyes are so blue they hurt, and he's ridiculously graceful when he moves.
Clarisse - Tall. Broad-shouldered. Robust. Stubborn chin. Slate-colored eyes. Naturally sandy-brown hair, but she hates the color and the way it curls up and how it gets in the way in a fight, so she wears it short and blonde and tough, just long enough to touch her collar. The tips are dyed red. She's self-conscious enough about her figure, so she hides it with baggy clothes as another form of armor. Would actually be kind of pear-shaped cute if she would grow out her hair, lose the chip on her shoulder, and let one of the Aphrodite kids make her over, but she insists that she doesn't have time for that crap.
Chiron - Tweedy sort of fellow. Thick brown hair, gray at the temples. A neatly-trimmed beard of which he is ridiculously vain. Looks like a cross between Daniel Craig (James Bond, Lord Asriel in the Golden Compass) and Anthony Stewart Head (Giles from Buffy). He also smells faintly like wet tweed. Just so you know. Always has a spot of ink on his shirt sleeve, for some reason.
Athena - Does resemble Annabeth slightly. Or, rather, Annabeth resembles her. They share the same sharp chin and flashing gray eyes, but Annabeth's are bright with curiousity whereas Athena's are more shrewd and calculating. Annabeth wants to know everything, whereas Athena believes she already knows everything she needs to. Sharp cheek bones. Lean muscles. Long legs. Shoulder-length hair -- more gentle waves than curls -- that's typically swept away from her face. (Like Annabeth, she hates it getting in her face.) Annabeth's father once compared to a girl on an album cover -- "sexy and nervy" -- but she wasn't terribly amused.
Hera - In a word? Flawless. Always. Unblemished ivory skin. Icy-blue eyes that are soft and nurturing as the spring sky when she's happy, but darken to a sapphire blue when she's well and truly furious. Long black hair, usually worn pinned up, with soft, natural highlights. Perfect mouth. Slender and graceful, never anything out of place. Delicate features. Just a hint of vulnerability -- as if she might break -- and a very "look but don't touch" presence, if that makes sense.
...did I forget anyone?

Wow! These are all really great, you can see the characters with the way you describe them. That's going to be how I imagine them all now I like Grover's and Luke's made me LOL for some reason. Chiron's decription reminded me vaguely of Remus Lupin, 'cause they're both the tweedy kinda guys. -huggles your descriptions-
